Roy Cooper Joins 2026 Senate Race: North Carolina Set for Political Showdown

Former Gov. Roy Cooper announced his 2026 Senate bid for North Carolina, aiming to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Thom Tillis.

Cooper's entry is a major win for Democrats, who view him as their top recruit to flip a key GOP-held seat in a crucial swing state.

"I have thought on it and prayed about it… I am running to be the next U.S. Senator from North Carolina," Cooper declared online.

Cooper teased his run at the NC Democrats’ “Unity Dinner,” saying, “Hey, I’m not sitting down, am I?” to applause and cheers.

The Senate GOP campaign arm hit back with ads accusing Cooper of aligning with Biden and failing NC on immigration and safety.

Serving as NC governor for 8 years, Cooper earned widespread support and was even considered a VP pick for Kamala Harris in 2024.

Cooper may face RNC Chair Michael Whatley, setting the stage for a fierce and expensive Senate showdown in 2026.

With the Senate at a 53-47 GOP edge, North Carolina is shaping up to be a battleground with national implications in 2026.
